Imported vehicle cover

Insuring an imported vehicle in Cyprus

A car that has arrived in Cyprus but has no plates yet cannot be registered without insurance, and cannot be insured the way a locally bought car is. This page covers what is different.

01

Cover before the car has plates

A vehicle can usually be insured on its chassis number before it is registered. The cover note forms part of the documents used for registration with the Road Transport Department. Exact validity and procedure are confirmed for the individual vehicle before anything is promised.

02

What the car is worth

For comprehensive cover the insurer needs a value. A Japanese auction car or a low-volume import may have no local reference price, so the figure has to be supported rather than simply looked up — with purchase documents, auction sheets, specification and comparable sales.

03

Models the rating tables do not contain

Insurers price from tables built around the local vehicle parc. A model that was never officially sold here may not appear in them. That usually means a referral to an underwriter rather than an instant answer, with questions about specification, parts availability and repair cost.

04

What the insurer will ask for

The quickest route to a clear answer is to assemble the car, import and driver details before the request is reviewed.

01

Purchase documents and the price paid.

02

Chassis number and full specification.

03

Shipping and arrival documents.

04

Registration status and where the car is being kept.

05

Your licence and claims history.

05

If you are still importing

isellcars.cy handles the import itself — sourcing, shipping and clearing. Same owner, separate business. If your car is already on its way, the insurance conversation is easier when the arrival date is known.
